An iconic getaway in Evritania: Exciting day trips and activities in nature

Three hours away from Patra’s port, you will find yourself at Evritania; the most beautiful region to start a mountainous roadtrip in Central Greece. Be a real explorer beneath mountains, gorges, rivers and picturesque villages.

The most-known town to begin exploring the entire area is Karpenisi; a mountainous town with paved streets, where you feel part of the Greek history, philoxenia and local culture, even from your first stroll!

Gaze around and take some photos at the central square where there are settled monuments of heroes of the Greek Revolution. Afterwards, we strongly recommend a break during which you can have lunch at traditional taverns and taste the local goodies, such as pies and cheese.

Your next destination is Korischades; a historical spot only 10km away from Karpenisi. Visit the Museum of National Resistance in a building aged back to 1901, used as a public school. The church of Agios Athanasios is located in the central square, so you may also visit it. If you are looking for something more adventurous, you can book a horse riding at the riverbank or make a stop and walk down the river for some spectacular shots.

Continuing the route between the river and the mountain, you will reach Megalo Horio, which means the “Big Village” in Greek, where you can have lunch with a view of the valley.

Alongside the Megalo Horio, there is also the Mikro Horio (Small Village), which is a form of two villages, the old and the new. They are connected with a 1.5km trail, which you can easily walk, and it is the best choice to explore the area and its beauty.

Final destination is the iconic Proussos Monastery. After a thrilling route, you will reach Proussos, which will take your breath away. The Monastery, which has existed since the 12th century, is built on a rock with a view of the surrounding mountains, forest, and river, making it a magical destination. Step up to the clock just across the Monastery for even more breathtaking views.

Bonus Tip: Book a canyoning or hiking tour and live the magical adventure of the gorge, the caves and the stone bridges in the river!
